Grainy
I have had a lot of comments and questions about some of my grainer art. Again - I'm not here to tell you every step that I take - but merely share some useful information that you can adjust and build upon to suit your style.
NOTE: The one that I am going to layout is pretty detailed and you can stop during any time during your implementation if you get the exact effect you want.

  • Grainy - Option A
  • Graining - Option B

    Grainy - Option A
    1. Open your selected image, and then duplicate the background image [so that you now have 2 working layers].
    2. See Starting Image here.
    3. You are now going to work on the new layer - we'll call it layer 2.
    4. On layer 2, click the Image Toolbar -> adjust -> auto contrast -> click ok.
    5. Now use the Filter -> blur -> gaussian blur [settings at 3.5] -> click ok.
    6. Change the layer mode to Hard Light -> opacity 80%
    7. Go to your original background image layer [layer 1], and use the Filter -> sharpen -> click ok.
    8. See Example here.
    9. Still on layer 1, use the Image Toolbar and click adjust -> brightness/contrast -> settings at +5 brightness and +24 contrast -> click ok.
    10. Create a new layer [above layer 2] - this will now be layer 3.
    11. Apply the Filter render -> clouds -> click ok. [clouds utilizes your two colors (background/foreground) so make sure one is darker and one is lighter].
    12. On layer 3, apply the Filter sharpen -> sharpen more -> click ok.
    13. Still on layer 3, click on the Image Toolbar -> adjust -> brightness/contrast -> settings at +27 brightness and +65 contrast -> click ok.
    14. Adjust layer 3's mode to overlay 100%
    15. See Example here.
    16. Now it is important to note that you can use this effect for coloring too. *g*.
    17. At this point you may find that you are happy with the graininess, if not - continue on.
    18. Click Select All -> edit copy merged -> edit paste [this will give you another new layer, we'll call this layer 4].
    19. On layer 4, apply the Filter video rave -> old film 2 -> settings 39 -> click ok.
    20. I'm sorry, once again, that I don't remember where I found the Video Rave Filter.
    21. Change the layer mode to Hard Light 61% opacity.
    22. Change the layer mode on layer 3 to Lighten at 86%.
    23. See Example here.

    Grainy - Option B
    5. Still on layer 2, apply the Filter ->distort -> diffuse glow -> settings graininess 6, glow amount 10, clear amount 15 -> click OK.
    6. Now in the upper Toolbar, click edit -> fade guassian blur -> mode to screen -> opacity to 54 -> click OK.
    7. On Layer 1, apply the Filter sharpen -> click OK.
    8. On Layer 2, apply the Filter sharpen -> click ok.
    9. See Example here.
    10. On Layer 2, using the Image Toolbar, click adjust -> brightness/contrast -> settings -18 brightness and +21 contrast -> click OK.
    11. On Layer 2, apply the Filter, noise -> add noise -> settings 8.35 amount, uniform, monochromatic -> click OK.
    12. Back down to Layer 1, and apply the Filter render -> clouds -> click OK.
    13. Using the upper Toolbar, click edit -> fade clouds -> mode difference -> opacity 70% -> click OK.
    14. See Example here.
Now - naturally, you should adjust the modes to your liking. =)
