Shapes When using shapes, it's easier to think "outside the box" as it were - don't think of the shape as conventional. Think of using it for what it will become - not what it is. Applying filters on shapes is fun. I hope this tutorial can open some creative doors for you as it has for me.Open your selected image. See Starting Image . On the Tools palette, click the line tool option. The tool options on your upper menu change. Be sure the shape layers tool is highlighted. For this example, I'm choosing the polygon tool - click on that. You'll notice in the box a little to the right, it says "sides". I typed in 3. Next to that on the right, be sure to highlight the first box, "new shape layer" [so that it creates a new layer above your chosen image.] See example here . Pick a spot on the image and use your mouse to draw the shape. I've made a large triangle - shown here . Click on the upper menu, edit , then transform , then skew . We're going to mess with the original shape. I usually pull and prod until I get a shape I like. Shown here . When it asks if you want to apply changes, choose apply . Rasterize the shape layer. Now I'm going to apply a filter to the shape to spruce it up a bit. I'm using a filter in Photoshop, under the distort filters for this example. I used shear as you can see here . Now I duplicate the shape layer and move the new copy around a bit to show the overlapping. One one layer, I choose the multiply mode and on the other layer I choose, the color dodge mode. Shown here . I decided to play with the main image to spruce it up a bit. I copied the background image. On the new copy I applied a dark gradient, and then did an edit fade gradient to where I liked. Then I smart blurred the copy. Then I changed the layer mode to darken and voila. Here is how the image finally looked - shown . I did nothing new to the shaper layers but they stand out a bit more. You could be done there if you chose, or do other effects. This was merely a starting point. /\ back to top
